Admission – If you have talent and feel driven to lead an active, creative life, you can apply for admission to Crossmedia Design, Fine Art or Moving Image.
Because the AKI is the smallest art academy in the Netherlands, we cannot admit more than 100 new students per year. So don’t wait too long to apply!
Requirements
- You have a pre-university education, senior general secondary education, senior secondary vocational education, or an equivalent diploma.
- Language requirements apply to the programmes.
- You must complete an admission procedure and receive a positive assessment. Under certain conditions, it is possible to enter the second year. For more information, please contact the programme director at office.aki@artez.nl
Registration
- Register for the entrance examination via Studielink. Please ensure that you select the correct programme and always in combination with the city of Enschede. You can also register for multiple programmes at the AKI!
- After registering, you will receive a confirmation email from ArtEZ Student Affairs.
- You will then receive more information about admission from the programme. You must take a separate entrance exam for each application. Admission, results and validity
Admission, results and validity
- The admission process consists of two parts. In the first step, you upload your digital portfolio and motivation letter via Studielink. If that is not possible, send a PDF via WeTransfer to office.aki@artez.nl.
- After sending your files, a committee will review your portfolio and letter of motivation. If your portfolio does not meet the requirements, you will be rejected.
- If the committee assesses your work positively, you will be invited for an interview.
- You will be notified of the results of your entrance examination by email within three to four working weeks. Admission is valid for the 2026/27 academic year.
Assessment criteria
- You are creative. You can express yourself visually, to work from observation and from concept.
- You have an understanding of and feel for colour, form and material. Your work is original and innovative.
- You are motivated, communicative, share your fascination and inspiration, and demonstrate decisiveness and discipline.
- You have an inquisitive and experimental attitude, you are curious and interested in culture, art and design.
Portfolio
- Provide as much insight as possible into your visual and artistic qualities.
- Include sufficient work in your portfolio, ideally between 20 and 60 works in different media.
- Your work does not have to be perfect; we would also like to see sketches, processes and intermediate steps.
- Provide a brief written explanation alongside your work.
- Video material (preferably no longer than 15 minutes) can be submitted via a link to YouTube or Vimeo. Make sure your PDF is no larger than 50 MB!
Motivation letter – We would like to get to know you, find out what you are looking for and why you want to study at the AKI. Write a motivation letter of 300-500 words explaining why you want to study with us, which direction you want to take and what challenges you see in that. Of course, you can also share all this with us via a video! For the Moving Image programme, the language must be English.
Interview – The admission interview can take place online or in person and lasts around 20 minutes. During this interview, you will provide insight into your abilities and interests, and you will also have the opportunity to explain your portfolio and motivation.
