Practice Projects Crossmedia Design

Annually, we receive numerous requests, participate in pitches, initiate projects ourselves, or acquire projects through our network. Here is a small selection:

Branding for Dyson’s Dotplot – Crossmedia Design students of the 3rd semester participated in a competition to develop a new branding for the Dotplot, a product by Dyson. Although the Dotplot does not detect breast cancer, it does alert changes in breast size that may not be easily perceived by touch. The product lacked a brand identity, and it was up to the students to brainstorm about images, packaging, colour palette, communication, and social media. Chris Roberts, the creative director at Dyson, travelled to Enschede specifically for the competition. This marks the first collaboration between Dyson and an art academy outside the United Kingdom. More details can be found in ArtEZ’s stories.

Gift for the King – Our king is the patron of the Historical Association Oranje Nassau (GVON), which manages over 7,000 artworks and has about 400 members. To celebrate GVON’s 100th anniversary in 2023, they contacted AKI requesting a representative gift for the king. Additionally, 100 smaller replicas of the gift had to be made as mementos for anniversary guests. Teacher Chris Slutter worked with first-year Crossmedia Design students on this project. GVON selected the design by Eline de Boer and Irene van Dijke. King Willem Alexander received the gift at Paleis Het Loo. More details can be found in ArtEZ’s stories.

ADCN Yearbook (Image Concepts) – Second-year Crossmedia Design students worked on a visual campaign using Polaroids for the ADCN Yearbook. Each book featured a unique Polaroid on the title page. The conceptual results were presented at a festive exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. All guests had the opportunity to personalize their individual yearbooks by choosing their favourite Polaroid for the cover.

Symposium Living in Daylight, Copenhagen in collaboration with Thorben Thyrgord (Concept & Exhibition) – As part of the Living in Daylight symposium in Copenhagen, Denmark, Thorben Thyrgord, an architect and publisher of the renowned AD magazine, asked the Crossmedia Design department to develop concepts and ideas related to “daylight.” A selection of these concepts was exhibited in parallel with the symposium. The results were so compelling that ultimately, all students traveled to Copenhagen to present their visualizations at the exhibition and attend the symposium.

Museum MORE + Ondernemers Ruurlo (Spatial Concept) – Museum MORE, dedicated to Dutch modern-realistic art, has a location in Gorssel and a second branch in the Ruurlo castle. While the castle attracts many visitors, few venture into the town of Ruurlo itself. The entrepreneurs’ association sought a solution to bridge the gap between the castle and the town. The students were tasked with exploring how to overcome the distance between the castle and the town.

Enschede Lab (Concepts for Social Issues) – The Enschede Lab was established in collaboration with the Municipality of Enschede, University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, ROC Enschede, and AKI. Students from all disciplines collaborated in mixed teams to address various socially relevant issues. Several innovative solutions regarding the water overflow issue were proposed and presented to the municipality. Additionally, a publication Waterkrant (in collaboration with 1Twente and Huis aan Huis) was developed to inform residents about the problem and potential solutions.

These projects showcase the versatility and creativity of the Crossmedia Design students, who are able to create innovative concepts and solutions for various assignments and collaborations.
