FILM, ART AND RESEARCH

Moving Image

Moving images shape how we see and understand the world. Making a positive impact is becoming increasingly important. As a moving image maker you can challenge existing perspectives, tell overlooked stories, create visual experiences and propose new ways of seeing.

Moving Image is a four-year interdisciplinary bachelor at the intersection of film, art and research. The programme lets you discover the potential of moving image through a unique curriculum that combines practical work, technical skills, theoretical reflection and research. By experimenting with images, time, space, perception, technology and storytelling, you will develop your own visual language and artistic approach.

You will learn from professionals in the field, including filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers and philosophers. Together with your lecturers and fellow students, you will push boundaries, exchange ideas and develop your own voice as an artist and critical maker.

In a world where still more tasks can be automated, the ability to question, imagine and create new possibilities matters more than ever. Moving Image provides a creative and reflective environment where you will learn to think independently, challenge conventions and develop your own artistic responses to a changing world.

What You Do

You will explore the wide spectrum of moving image: from short fiction film, video art, and multi-screen installation to visual essay, documentary and virtual reality. You will also work across related fields such as photography, sound design and creative technologies. Throughout your study, you will experiment with both analogue and digital media, combining hands-on making with conceptual thinking.

You will learn about the artistic and technical aspects of video, cinematography and photography. In technical courses you will get familiar with video and photo editing, storyboarding, animation, interactive media, VR/XR, 3D and 360° applications. You will also learn to work with different cameras, microphones, light and green screen. Along the way, you will explore how AI and machine learning can be used creatively and critically in your work. You will have access to professional photography and film studios, darkrooms, a techlab, a soundlab, a biolab, editing suites and a range of AKI workshops, all supported by technical experts.

Theory classes introduce you to contemporary philosophy and the history of moving image, media and film. You will discuss what images do, how images influence the way we feel and think, and use them as a gateway to understand society and the more-than-human world. You will also learn to research ideas and connect your findings to your own artistic projects.

Our students have presented their work at festivals, exhibitions and cultural institutions including NFF Nederlands Film Festival, Ars Electronica, Go Short, Koorts Film Festival, Dutch Design Week, University Twente, Museumfabriek/ The Overkill Festival, Concordia, Het Kunstgemaal, EYE Film museum, Rijksmuseum Twenthe and Dutch public broadcaster NPO.

Curriculum

The programme develops from experimentation and acquiring new skills to independent projects, artistic research and your final graduation work. You will have the freedom to explore, supported by a clear structure, in-depth theory courses and specialized labs. With four full years dedicated to Moving Image from day one, you’ll have the time to develop your own creative approach, build a unique portfolio and prepare for a future in the ever-changing field of the moving image.

Year 1 – Experiment & inspiration

You will experiment artistically and conceptually with video, film, and photography. You will explore analogue and digital photography, multi-channel video installation and live-action film. In theory classes, you will investigate how images relate to perception, meaning, media and technology. Through texts, films, artworks, writing exercises, presentations, and through making your first exhibition, you will learn to look at images and image-making from different perspectives.

Year 2 – Projects & collaboration

You will have more freedom to develop and carry out your own projects. You will learn to present ideas, ask for feedback and collaborate with fellow students. Dedicated clinics will introduce you to stop-motion animation, photogrammetry, interviewing, Super-8 film and more. You will also present your work at a Moving Image exhibition in a professional art gallery. Courses in Research and Creative Process will help you connect your work to artistic and societal questions, and discover what drives your creative practice.

Year 3 – Research & portfolio

You will focus on building a portfolio that reflects your interests and ambitions, and helps you decide which direction to take within the broad field of Moving Image. Your portfolio opens the door to an exchange or internship or provides a starting point for an independent research project, in the Netherlands or abroad. You will learn to work on longer projects including a short film that will be presented at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam. You will also learn different approaches to artistic research and begin preparing for the research thesis you will complete in your final year.

Year 4 – Network & graduation

In your graduation year, you will focus on your research thesis and final project. You will develop a research question and carry out artistic experiments to prepare for your graduation work. Individual meetings with supervisors alternate with feed-back sessions and group presentations with fellow students. You will explore career opportunities, make connections with professionals and bring your portfolio together. Finally, you will present your graduation project and research thesis at the AKI ArtEZ Finals exhibition.
