Our vision

Freedom with commitment

Human scale & personal support

With a maximum of 400 students across all year groups, we know each other by name. You are granted immense freedom, yet we actively guard against indifference. Every student is paired with a lecturer as a study career coach to regularly discuss individual progress, focus, and depth. The academy provides fertile ground for a community where curiosity, autonomy, and equality are matter-of-fact.

Learning through questioning

For many students, the first day at the academy marks the beginning of an entirely different way of learning. Ideas that previously existed only in diaries or sketchbooks are shared, discussed, and challenged. Diverse perspectives propel thoughts further, creating space for what has not yet been defined. This fosters an environment where individuality does not stand in isolation, but evolves in relation to others. A place to claim space, take time, and find peers with whom ideas can flourish.

Clear structure and artistic space

Plato described the academy as a walled garden: the sounds of the outside world remain audible, yet within there is the calm to think, make, and investigate. This vision mirrors AKI and Enschede: a city offering space for deep concentration alongside a vibrant social and cultural life, where living remains affordable and creative breeding grounds are just around the corner. Not secluded from the world, but with sufficient distance to observe it with undivided attention.

Compact and comprehensive

Our 11 specialized workshops are open to all study programmes. This exchange of materials, media, and perspectives invites you to work across the boundaries of your own discipline. At the same time, AKI ArtEZ reaches beyond the academy: through collaboration with the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, ArtEZ Conservatorium, and TETEM, and through an extensive international network of universities of the arts.

LECTURERS, INSTRUCTORS AND OTHER EXPERTS

Learning with and from each other

Our education is dedicated to artistic freedom, positive energy, equality, and mutual care. We do not work within rigid hierarchies or anonymous lecture halls, but in open studios and workshops where students, lecturers, and instructors work shoulder to shoulder as colleagues.

All of our lecturers and instructors have one foot in the academy and the other firmly planted in contemporary professional practice. They travel to Enschede one or two days a week, spending the remainder of their time working in their own studios and artistic practices. Consequently, our teaching community is distinctly diverse in style, background, and vision. The academy is no ivory tower, but an active working community of designers, artists, instructors, and students learning from one another on equal terms.`

Join the community

AKI students and alumni regularly participate in national and international exhibitions, film festivals, residencies, and biennials. These experiences offer a vital platform to present their practice beyond the academy walls and connect directly with the broader art world. Our recurring presence at prestigious competitions underscores the distinct quality of AKI education, demonstrating how our students develop into artists with an authentic, independent voice on the international stage.
